In Eastern culture, the gates of the buildings mark the importance of the city, the house or the person.
In the past, the gates of the Khiva city were also used for its defense.
Ichan Kala has four gates. In the 1970s its Western gates, Ata Darwaza, were totally restored based on the archive photographs of the 19 century. All the gates of Ichan Kala resemble each other.
